About the Artist & Artwork
American painter Childe Hassam (1859–1935) was a trailblazing force in American art, celebrated as one of the most prominent pioneers of American Impressionism. He was instrumental in adapting the light-drenched, broken-brushwork techniques of the French avant-garde to distinctively American subjects, capturing fleeting atmospheric effects with vibrant color harmonies.

Painted in France during the summer of 1888, In the Sun captures Hassam's deep fascination with the rhythm, light, and texture of the sunny outdoors. He chose to represent a woman in a luminous white dress seated amidst lush, sunlit foliage not just as a traditional portrait, but to discover a fresh visual language that mirrored the rapid evolution of modern sensory experiences.

What makes his process particularly fascinating is how he used color to construct the illusion of brilliant sunlight dancing across surfaces. In In the Sun, Hassam completely transformed the terrace scene by stripping away hard outlines, replacing rigid details with vibrant, blocky strokes of pure pigment and dappled shadows. Interestingly, this masterpiece was created while Hassam and his wife Maud were staying in the rural village of Villiers-le-Bel, where the artist found endless inspiration in the local gardens. Sizing Information
Listed sizes represent the outer glaze dimensions. Because the 2.4 mm mount is included, the visible artwork area will be slightly smaller than the outer glass dimensions to perfectly accommodate the mat border. Standard sizes scale beautifully to ratios like 20 x 30 cm, 30 x 40 cm, or 50 x 70 cm.
