About the Artist & Artwork
French painter Robert Delaunay (1885–1941) was a trailblazing force in the early 20th-century avant-garde, celebrated as a pioneer of Orphism. This movement evolved from Cubism, prioritizing intense color harmonies and geometric forms to evoke dynamic sensory experiences.
Painted in France in 1930, Les Coureurs (The Runners) captures Delaunay's deep fascination with the rhythm, speed, and energy of the modern era. He chose to represent athletes on a track not as a traditional sporting scene, but to discover a fresh visual language that mirrored the rapid technological and athletic advancements of his generation.
What makes his process particularly fascinating is how he used color to construct the illusion of movement. In Les Coureurs, Delaunay completely abstractly represented the runners' bodies by stripping away anatomical detail, replacing their heads with vibrant orange discs and their bodies with blocky stripes. Interestingly, when one of his earlier versions of Les Coureurs was restored at the Musée d'Art moderne de Troyes, conservators discovered a hidden, vertical portrait of Bella Chagall (the wife of painter Marc Chagall) painted on the reverse side of the canvas. This shows how Delaunay constantly recycled his materials as his abstract theories evolved.
