About the Artist & Artwork
American painter Childe Hassam (1859–1935) stood as a leading figure of American Impressionism, famous for capturing the brilliant light and shifting atmosphere of both coastal retreats and bustling urban centers. After absorbing the techniques of the French Impressionists in Paris, he adapted their loose brushwork and bright palette to capture the distinct energy of New York City, creating a brilliant visual record of the early 20th century.

Painted in New York City in 1918, Avenue of the Allies; Great Britain, Brazil, Belgium belongs to Hassam's celebrated Flag Series, a collection of roughly thirty vibrant canvases created during the First World War. The composition transforms Fifth Avenue into a sunlit canyon arrayed with patriotic banners. Hassam masterfully uses the bright, high-contrast light of an autumn day to dissolve the grand architecture and distant crowds into a shimmering field of color, treating the flags as dynamic blocks of light and motion rather than mere static symbols.

What makes this particular work fascinating is its celebration of international cooperation during the final months of the war, when Fifth Avenue was renamed the Avenue of the Allies for a massive Liberty Loan drive. Hassam focuses on the distinctive banners of the Allied nations, prominently featuring the British Union Jack, the bold green and yellow diamond of Brazil, and the tricolor of Belgium floating above the crowded street. Interestingly, Hassam painted this masterpiece in October 1918, just weeks before the signing of the Armistice that ended the conflict.
