About the Artist & Artwork
American painter Childe Hassam (1859–1935) was a leading figure of American Impressionism, famous for capturing the brilliant play of light on coastal waters and bustling city streets. After spending years absorbing the techniques of French masters in Paris, he adapted their flickering brushwork and vibrant palettes to depict American landscapes, establishing a highly influential body of work that defined the era.

Painted in Connecticut in 1902, Oyster Sloop, Cos Cob showcases Hassam's deep connection to the historic waterfront of the Cos Cob art colony.
