Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde painter born in Paris, where he established himself as a highly eccentric and restless figure in the modern art world. In 1909, the year he painted Les Oranges, Picabia was heavily immersed in the Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist movements, capturing light and color with vibrant, thick brushstrokes. This specific period marked a critical turning point in his life, just before he completely abandoned traditional styles to become a leader of the radical Dada movement.

What makes Picabia's process fascinating during this era is that he often painted his landscapes and still lifes entirely from memory or small sketches inside his studio, rather than working directly in front of the subject.
