About the Artist:
Gustav Klimt was a prominent Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession movement. He painted this masterpiece in Vienna during his renowned "Golden Phase," completing the original large scale work between 1900 and 1901. Klimt was famous for his rebellious attitude toward traditional art institutions, frequently shocking critics with his intense themes. He painted this specific imagery as part of a massive ceiling mural titled "Medicine," which was intended for the University of Vienna but was ultimately rejected by the faculty due to its controversial nature.

An interesting aspect of Klimt's creative process was his integration of real gold leaf layers directly onto the canvas, a technique inspired by Byzantine mosaics he observed during a trip to Ravenna. He combined these shimmering metallic details with intricate geometric patterns to create a sense of ethereal luxury. Although the monumental original canvas was tragically destroyed by a fire at Schloss Immendorf in 1945, this striking depiction of the Greek goddess of health remains preserved through the digital file Hygieia Artist Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862-1918).
