About the Artist

Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a celebrated French Fauvist painter known for his vibrant, cheerful depictions of modern leisure. He painted "Petite baigneuse a Sainte-Adresse" capturing the scenic coastal atmosphere of Sainte-Adresse, a seaside resort in Normandy right next to his birthplace of Le Havre. Living and working through the early 20th century, Dufy infused this period with an optimistic brilliance, capturing outdoor life, regattas, and sunny coastlines while moving away from traditional shading to embrace pure, saturated color.

What makes Dufy's work completely distinct is his innovative "couleur-lumineuse" technique. He discovered that the mind registers color faster than a sharply defined outline, leading him to paint bright, fluid patches of background color first, then layer swift, calligraphic black line-work over the top. This approach gave his coastal subjects an unmatched sense of movement, breeze, and radiant light that feels completely alive on the canvas.
