About the Artist

Childe Hassam was a pioneering American Impressionist celebrated for his ability to capture the brilliance of natural light and atmosphere. Painted during the summer of 1891, "Poppies, Isles of Shoals 1891" was created off the coast of New Hampshire on Appledore Island, where Hassam spent many productive seasons surrounded by a lively salon of artists and writers. This masterpiece beautifully contrasts the soft, vibrant red of the wild island poppies against the rugged, sun-bleached coastal rocks and the shimmering blue of the Atlantic Ocean, epitomizing the very best of American plein-air painting.

Hassam's approach to this specific piece relied on a brilliant, high-keyed palette and a complex network of short, staccato brushstrokes that mimic the flickering quality of coastal sunlight.
