About the Artist:

Paul George Lawler was a prominent twentieth-century American commercial illustrator who achieved great acclaim during the golden age of aviation advertising. In 1937, Pan American Airways commissioned him to design a series of striking travel posters aimed at capturing the romance and thrill of international flight. Working from his studio in the United States, Lawler painted this vibrant promotional piece in 1938 to highlight the exotic allure of South American destinations along the carrier's rapidly expanding flight routes. His cinematic framing helped redefine commercial art, turning remote historical wonders into glamorous, bucket-list destinations for affluent travelers.

An interesting aspect of Lawler's creative process was his masterful reliance on rich, glowing gouache layers and sharp, clean masking techniques to achieve a distinct Art Deco style. In this specific masterpiece, he seamlessly bridges ancient heritage with modern innovation by juxtaposing a sleek Douglas DC-3 aircraft cruising through the skies against the towering peaks of the Andes and the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. His clever decision to include local indigenous figures and llamas in the foreground added an element of authentic cultural storytelling, making his advertisements highly collectible pieces of fine art that transcended their original commercial purpose.
