About the Artist

Frederick Childe Hassam was a pioneering American Impressionist painter brilliant at capturing the shifting light and bustling energy of urban life. Painted in 1894, The Flower Seller was created in New York City, where Hassam lived and worked after returning from his formative years in Paris. He was deeply fascinated by the unique atmosphere of rainy city streets, using short, vibrant brushstrokes to depict the glistening reflections on wet pavement and the colorful bursts of floral stalls contrasting against the dark, cloaked figures of city dwellers during the late 19th century.

An interesting aspect of Hassam's process was his dedication to painting en plein air (outdoors), even in challenging weather, to capture the most authentic atmospheric conditions. To achieve this without being disrupted by the busy crowds, he frequently painted from the windows of cabs or hotels, giving his street scenes a slightly elevated, observational viewpoint. Over his highly prolific career, he produced over 3,000 works, remaining a staunch defender of Impressionism in America and proving that everyday urban moments could possess the same romantic beauty as classical landscapes.
