About the Artist:
Francis Picabia was an eccentric and highly influential French avant-garde artist born in Paris in 1879. Though he became famous later in life for his major contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements, his early career at the turn of the century was deeply rooted in impressionist and post-impressionist landscape painting. He painted Paysage 1902 during a highly prolific period spent traveling through the French countryside and along the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast, captures the shifting morning light hitting the rocky shoreline and rolling hills with thick, vibrant brushstrokes.

An interesting aspect of Picabia’s early process was his incredible ability to synthesize different styles while maintaining a massive commercial appeal, often producing hundreds of stunning impressionist landscapes that completely sold out at Parisian galleries. However, he was a restless creative who refused to stay in one artistic box for long. His landscape era served as the technical foundation that allowed him to completely break traditional rules later on, moving from classical maritime scenes to radical abstract machinery and avant-garde poetry that shocked the global art world.
