About the Artist:
Martin Glanzman was an American illustrator active in New York during the mid-20th century, a time when commercial aviation was booming and airlines relied heavily on striking, stylized artwork to capture the public imagination. Commissioned by American Airlines in 1953 to design this promotional piece for Texas routes, Glanzman worked out of his studio space to distill the vast spirit of the Lone Star State into a singular commercial masterpiece. He was known for his sharp eye for bold advertising and graphic layouts that seamlessly combined regional iconography with the modern luxury of flight.

The 1953 post-war era saw a huge shift toward sleek mid-century design, which Glanzman embraced fully through his distinct commercial illustration process. To emphasize the iconic character of the Southwest, he chose to juxtapose industrial oil derricks and urban skylines against the stark, floating visages of longhorn cattle, split by a soaring Douglas DC-6 or Flagship passenger liner. His artistic technique relied on dramatic shifts in scale and a warm, earth-toned color palette that immediately evoked the rugged yet rapidly modernizing identity of Texas, making his travel posters highly collectible examples of mid-century aviation art.
