About the Artist:
Raoul Dufy was a prominent French Fauvist painter known for his colorful, decorative style that captured the leisure and pleasure of early 20th-century European life. Born in Le Havre, Normandy, Dufy later moved to Paris to study art, where he became heavily influenced by the vibrant palettes of the Fauves. Throughout his career, he frequently painted scenes of regattas, concerts, and racecourses, often working in his Parisian studio or on location throughout France to translate the energy of public spectacles onto canvas. His 1924 work, "Chevaux de cirque," reflects his deep fascination with movement, performance, and the lively atmosphere of the traditional circus entertainment that captivated Paris during the roaring twenties.

An interesting aspect of Dufy's artistic process was his development of a unique technique known as the "couleur-dessin" or color-design method. He observed that the human eye perceives bright colors faster than it outlines shapes, which inspired him to paint broad, fluid washes of vibrant pigment across the background before superimposing rapid, stenographic black brushstrokes on top to delineate his figures. This intentional separation of color and line allowed him to convey a sense of rapid movement and spontaneous energy, making his work appear remarkably fresh and modern. Beyond his paintings, Dufy was an exceptionally versatile creator who achieved major acclaim for his textile designs, ceramics, and large-scale public murals, illustrating his belief that fine art should seamlessly integrate with everyday design.
