About the Artist:
Charles Hermans was an influential Belgian painter born into a wealthy family in Brussels in 1839. He received his early creative education at alternative, liberal workshops rather than rigid academic environments, later refining his craftsmanship in both Paris and Italy. Hermans played a pivotal role in establishing the Realist movement within Belgian art, often pushing back against conservative academic standards by documenting genuine, unvarnished human moments. One fascinating aspect of his artistic career is that despite his focus on grounded realism, his early success was driven by popular depictions of the quiet lives of Italian monks. He traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean coast, soaking in the region's bright light and dynamic atmosphere, which eventually informed the vibrant coastal palettes seen throughout his mature works.

(They Have Left!), painted around 1900 during the height of European Belle Époque coastal leisure culture.
