About the Artist:
Francis Picabia was a French painter born in Paris in 1879. He created the painting titled Manucode in 1929. He painted the original 100 by 81 centimeter oil on canvas while living and working in the South of France. Picabia came from a wealthy family with a French mother and a Cuban and Spanish father. This personal fortune allowed him to experiment freely with his art without worrying about commercial success. He was famously passionate about fast cars and yachts. He constantly reinvented his style throughout his career. He moved fluidly between major movements like Cubism, Dada, and Surrealism.

Manucode is part of his famous series known as the Transparencies. He worked on this series largely between 1927 and 1932. His unique process involved superimposing translucent layers of imagery on top of one another. This technique imitated the visual effects of multiple exposures in photography. This connection to photography was deeply personal for him. His grandfather was an early pioneer of the photographic medium. By layering natural elements and faces, he created a secret depth that did not rely on traditional perspective. He wanted the original foundation of his paintings to remain visible underneath the final surface.
