About John Copley and This Artwork:

John Copley was a highly respected British printmaker and painter. He was born in Manchester in 1875 and dedicated his life to the art of lithography. He was a founding member of the Senefelder Club in London. This club was created specifically to revive lithography as a respected fine art form.

Copley created this specific lithograph, known as Athletes Dressing, in 1912. He drew and printed this work in his London studio. He was well known for operating his own lithographic press. The text imp next to his signature stands for impressit. This Latin word indicates that he printed the image himself. Copley loved capturing human movement and everyday scenes. The figures in this print show his incredible skill at rendering the human form with confident and sweeping lines.
