About the Artist and the Painting:
Frederick Arthur Bridgman painted The Orange Seller in 1920. He was an American painter who relocated to Paris. He is famous for his detailed Orientalist market scenes and vibrant landscapes.
Bridgman traveled through Algeria and Egypt in the 1870s. He gathered hundreds of sketches during these trips. He returned to France and used these sketches as references for decades. This specific 1920 painting was created in his French studio. It depicts a sunlit North African bazaar with an orange vendor and a donkey. The exact real world location is not recorded. It is likely a composite of his memories from various Algerian and Egyptian marketplaces.
