About the Artist:
Elton Clay Fax (1909–1993) was one of America's most celebrated African-American artists, illustrators, and chroniclers, whose early career was shaped alongside the luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. Renowned for his powerful dedication to documenting the global Black diaspora, Fax traveled extensively throughout West Africa in the late 1950s under the sponsorship of the American Society of African Culture. His arrival in Conakry, Guinea in 1958 placed him on the ground during an electric, revolutionary moment in history: the exact year Guinea courageously voted for total independence from French colonial rule, emerging as a historic pioneer of post-colonial African sovereignty. Rather than sketching political elites, Fax focused his pen on the immense dignity, style, and grace of everyday citizens navigating this era of profound national pride.
